[Also in Division G5] A core for a magnetic record/ playback head of good wearing properties is made by metallurgically uniting a body portion 24 (46, 52) of magnetically and mechanically soft material to polepieces 22 (48, 51) of magnetically soft but mechanically hard material. A solid member 24 may be either dipped into a heap of powder of the material 22 and an electric current passed to provide an agglomerate fused or sintered to the member 24 (Fig. 1, not shown) or it may be dipped in the presence of helium into a bath of the material 22 in a molten state (Fig. 2, not shown) and the portion 22 machined to shape, or alternatively, sheets 26, 28 of the materials may be resistance-welded along their adjoining edges and laminations stamped out and assembled into a core-member of suitable thickness, Fig. 6. Heattreatment to develop both the mechanical and magnetic properties to a desired state and conventional assembly to a head, Fig. 8, are not detailed, but the choice of appropriate component materials can improve the head performance (Fig. 7, not shown). The body portions are made from known nickel/iron or other " soft " magnetic alloys, while the choice of material for the polepieces includes aluminium/iron alloys described in Specification 931,037 and in U.S.A. Specifications 2,193,768, 2,768,915, 2,801,942 and 2,859,143 which are referred to.
