Abstract
<PICT:0950407/C1/1> In tempering flat glass sheets by passing them in horizontal position through a heating zone and then through a cooling zone, the sheets are moved at constant speed through the first part of the heating zone where they are raised to the annealing temperature, are then speeded up as they pass through the remainder of the heating zone and into the cooling zone, and are then decelerated for passage through the cooling zone. The plates A are fed into the furnace 18 on a roller conveyer 29. When a sheet reaches the gap 59 between the conveyer 29 and another conveyer 34 moving at the same speed, a photo-electric cell 57 operates a timing device whereby, after a sufficient interval to permit the sheet to pass completely on to the second conveyer, the conveyer is speeded up to the speed of a third conveyer 40 travelling about six times faster than the conveyer 29. When the sheet is fully supported on the conveyer 40, the timing device acts to return the conveyer 34 to the speed of the conveyer 29. The last roller of the conveyer 40 is outside the furnace in the cooling zone 14 where cooling gas from reservoirs 24 is blown on to each side of the glass. The sheet passes on to a conveyer 46 which travels at the speed of the conveyer 40 until the leading edge of the sheet is scanned by a photo-electric cell 61 which causes deceleration of the conveyer to the speed of a final conveyer 52 which travels about 30% faster than the conveyer 29 and carries the sheet through the cooling zone. A further photo-electric cell 62 restores the speed of the conveyer 51 to that of the conveyer 40.
