Abstract

A saturated hydrocarbon polymer, which is at least partially crystalline and is in microporous (i.e. of pore diameter not above 1m .) solid form with an average particle diameter of at least 10m and has a surface area of at least 1 sq.m./g., is contacted with a chlorinating and/or fluorinating agent at a temperature below the crystalline melting point of the polymer until halogen has reacted on the more accessible surfaces of the polymer to confer structural stability to resist agglomeration at the crystalline melting point of the polymer; then in a second stage the product of the first stage is contacted with a fluorinating, chlorinating and/or brominating agent while the product is maintained in particulate form at a temperature above the crystalline melting point of the polymer and at which no extensive agglomeration of the polymer sets in, until at least a further 5% of halogen has been introduced into the polymer. The polymer may be polyethylene or a copolymer of ethylene with minor amounts of propylene, butene-1, or, e.g. isotactic, polypropylene or a polyvinyl halide. The polymer may be halogenated in the first stage to give 5-25% halogen in the product. Polyethylene showing at least 75% crystallinity by X-ray methods, of nitrinsic viscosity at least 6 dl./g. and immessurably low melt index and in particulate form with an average particle diameter of at least 50m may be halogenated with chlorine and at least the second stage may be in aqueous medium using a temperature of 10-100 DEG C. in the first stage and 130-190 DEG C. in the second stage with the partial pressure of chlorine being at least 1/2 Atm. and the second stage chlorination may be continued until the chlorine content of the final product is at least double that of the first stage product. The product may be used as a floor tile. Specification 858,674 is referred to.
