Abstract

A glass surface is bonded to another glass surface or to the surface of a transparent rigid sheet by first treating the glass surface or surfaces with vinyl trichlorosilane, then interposing between the surfaces to be cemented a cement which is a polymerizable material that is liquid at the cementing temperature and which comprises methyl methacrylate, a plasticiser therefor and a cross-linking agent which is a polymerizable compound containing at least two >C=C< groups per molecule, said methyl methacrylate being in monomeric or partially polymerized form or in monomeric form containing in solution a solid polymer of methyl methacrylate, there being to each 100 parts by weight of methylmethacrylate in whatever form, from 30 to 80 parts by weight of said plasticizer and from 0.8 to 15 parts by weight of said cross-linking agent, and then subjecting the cementing layer to polymerizing conditions to convert said layer into a plasticized polymeric composition. The term "glass surface" includes ceramic surfaces. Before use the cement is preferably degassed by subjecting it to reduced pressure, so that there is less than 4 mls of dissolved gas per 100 gms. of cement at 20 DEG C. and atmospheric pressure. Lists of suitable plasticizers are given including phosphates, phthalates, esters of other dibasic acids, esters of monobasic acids, substituted toluene sulphonamides, substituted amides, hydrocarbons, halogenated hydrocarbons and ether compounds and the cross-linking agents mentioned are esters of polyhydric alcohols with monobasic unsaturated carboxylic acids e.g. triethylene glycol dimethacrylate and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, esters of unsaturated alcohols with dibasic carboxylic acids e.g. diallyl phthalate, adipate and carbonate, and divinyl benzene. Small amounts of other polymerized and/or polymerizable monoethylenically unsaturated compounds may be present in the cement e.g. styrene. Catalysts which are activated by heat or light may be used for polymerizing the cement. Catalysts activated by heat include benzoyl peroxide, lauroyl peroxide, certain organic azo compounds such as a a 1azodiisobutyronitrile, and organic peroxides used with tertiary amines, e.g. benzoyl peroxide with dimethyl para toluidine or dimethyl aniline. Catalysts activated by light include benzoin, acetoin, butyroin and diacetyl. In the examples the cements consist of methyl methacrylate monomer, methyl methacrylate polymer, dibutyl phthalate and triethylene glycol dimethacrylate or ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as cross-linking agent and the surfaces bonded are glass to glass and glass to polymethylmethacrylate. Also a glass guard is bonded to the viewing surface of a television tube.
