Abstract

949,811. Perforating; assembling force fits. BELLING & LEE Ltd. Dec. 28, 1962 [Dec. 29, 1961], No. 46589/61. Headings B3U and B3W. [Also in Division F2] In a method of securing an insert in sheet material a nonpointed spigot projecting from one face of a flange is used as a punch to make its own aperture in the sheet material, the said face of the flange being so formed and pressure being applied so that the said Face of the flange is staked to the face of the sheet material. The insert comprises a threaded spigot 1, a larger shank 2, which has a straight knurl 3 and is joined to the spigot by a chamfer 4, and a flange 5 which is undercut to form points 7, 8, 9 and 10. The insert and sheet material are placed between a die 12 and a ram 13. The spigot punches out a disc 14 and the shank 2 enlarges the aperture by punching out a washer 16. The hole in the washer is enlarged by the chamfer 4 so that the washer falls off the spigot. Continued pressure forces the corners 7 . . . 10 into the sheet material 11.
