949,223. Change-speed control. HUMBER Ltd., and H. W. THORNLEY. Dec. 11, 1961 [Sept. 13, 1960], No. 31553/60. Heading F2D. In a column-mounted gearshift mechanism in which a rotatable and slidable rod 11 is operated by a manual gear lever 14, the rod carries coiled compression springs 22, 28, the former being effective when the rod is raised to engage first or second gear and the latter when the rod is lowered to engage reverse. The lower spring 22 is mounted between a radial abutment pin 24 on the rod and a stop member 20 carried by the steering column 10, while the upper spring 28 is mounted between a second radial pin 29 on the rod and a washer 32 which, in the neutral position, engages a third pin 30 on the rod and, by the action of spring 22, bears against stop member 20. To engage first or second gear a light force is necessary to raise rod 11 against spring 22, the pin 30 and washer 32 separating from stop 20 so that spring 28 is carried bodily with rod 11, Fig. 3, while for reverse rod 11 is lowered so that pin 30 separates from washer 32 and spring 28 is compressed between pin 29 and stop 20, Fig. 4. Rotation of rod 11 is transmitted to the gear-box 17 by a linkage 16, and longitudinal movement by a Bowden cable 18. The upper end of spring 22 has a radial portion 26 engaging column 10 to place the spring under torsion to take up clearance.
