[Also in Division B4] The invention relates to means for providing uniform spacing between die cuts and/or printed impressions, e.g. between the printed labels 17 of Figs. 6 or 7, made upon continuous web where a printing plate or cutting die is the sole means for forwardly moving the web. A laminated web 10 passes through the apparatus, as shown in Fig. 2. A rotary segmental cutting die 13 having leading and trailing cutting edges 15 and 16 respectively, extending from the recessed surface 14, which may have a printing pad with inking arrangements seated therein (not illustrated), moves the web forward intermittently, working against a rotatable plate 21. Attached to, but capable of rotational adjustment with the shaft 20 of the cutting die 13 is a cam disc 22. A link 28 pivoted at 29 to a rocker bracket 31 has a cam follower 27 and is adjustably supported by a link 61. The rocker bracket 31, which maintains the position shown in Fig. 2 until at or about the time the trailing edge 16 of the die 13 leaves the web has a clamping member 42 attached to a rotatable shaft 41, which is biased against a web support plate 40 by a spring 45 pulling on a lever 44 attached to the shaft 41. A second lever 43, attached to the shaft 41, spaces the clamping member 42 from the web whilst the rocker bracket is in the position shown in Fig. 2, by engaging an adjustable stop screw 46. The spring 45 also provides the force to maintain the cam follower 27 against the cam disc 22 and provides the initial force for the rocker bracket 31 to swing about the shaft 32 in the direction of the movement of the web, until the follower 27 reaches the concave part of the cam disc 22. On movement of the rocker bracket 31, the clamping member 42 moves down to grip the web against the support plate 40. In this manner, no random movement of the web due to its inertia is allowd when the trailing edge 16 of the die 13 leaves the web. A second clamping member 51 attached to a sleeve 50 rotatable about the shaft 41, is biased against the web support plate 40 by a spring 53 pulling on a lever 52, Fig. 1, attached to the sleeve 50. This clamping member 51 permanently applies pressure to the web resulting in a tension during the feeding of the web. In a second embodiment, Fig. 8 (not shown), the adjustable link 61 is replaced by a non-adjustable link 72, and the cam disc 22 is clamped in an adjustable position on the shaft 20 by a grub screw 75. The rocker bracket 31 is modified and has only one clamping member 78. Running adjustments may be made to the position of the link 61 to vary the spacing between the labels 17, Fig. 6, but in the second embodiment, the apparatus is stopped to adjust the angular position of the cam disc 22 relative to the shaft 20. Both embodiments allow spacing to be varied at will from no space to an overlapping condition or to a medium, but uniform, amount of space.
