In a vehicle, e.g. an armoured vehicle or ambulance, having a compartment A substantially sealed from the ambient atmosphere, a pumping device 9 draws ambient air through a first air cleaning device 4 to a ducting having a valve 10 which directs the air into the compartment, either through a second air cleaning device 12, or through an open branch 16, to protect the occupants of the vehicle from e.g. chemical or radio-active warfare agents. An ambient air inlet 1 for the system has a draining chamber 2, and the air cleaner 4, for removing course dust, comprises several whirl chambers from which the dust is extracted by a fan 6. The second air cleaner 12 comprises an adsorption unit, e.g. containing granular activated carbon, and/or a fine pore filter, and its exit is controlled by a rosette closure disc 13 linked by a rod 15 to a three-way cock 10 for simultaneous operation of the two valves by a handle 14. In an alternative lay-out (Fig. 2, not shown), the centrifugal fan is downstream of the second air cleaner, and interlinked three-way cocks on either side of the latter direct air either through the second air cleaner or through a by-pass.
