Abstract

Wrapping materials for explosives containing ethylene glycol dinitrate are tested for permeability to ethylene glycol dinitrate by placing the explosive on a sheet of the wrapping material which divides an upper from a lower compartment of a vessel, passing a stream of air through the lower compartment and measuring the amount of ethylene glycol dinitrate entrained. The explosive used in the tests contains ethylene glycol dinitrate, nitroglycerine, nitrocotton, sodium nitrate, wood meal, bagasse, and chalk. Wrappings having at least one layer of polypropylene or polyethylene terephthalate are found to be effective barrier materials.
