[Also in Divisions E1, F2 and F4] A heat insulating structure comprises a supporting wall 4, e.g. of a container used for transporting or storing materials which must be maintained at low temperatures, such as liquefied natural gas, and a plurality of panels 2 mounted on the wall 4 in end-to-end and side-by-side relation, each panel comprising an evacuated honeycomb core 10, a fluidimpervious outer sheet 14 bonded to one surface of the core, a fluid - impervious inner sheet 12 bonded to the opposite surface of the core, means for attaching the outer sheet 14 to the wall 4, and sealing means, for example continuous, fluid-impervious sheets 23, completely enclosing the lateral surfaces of the core between the outer and inner sheets 14 and 12. The wall may be the inner hull or the main hull of a ship. The sheets 14 and 12 of adjacent panels are interconnected by members 15 and 13 and the spaces between the panels are filled with insulation 16. The sheets 12 and members 13 may be formed of dimpled construction or with a cross-ribbed pattern of checkerboard or diamond-like shape. The sheets 12, 14 and 23 may be made from aluminium, aluminium alloys, copper, magnesium, stainless steel, plywood, glass fibre or reinforced plastics. The spaces between the outer sheet 14 and the wall 4, and the evacuated passages of the core 10, are preferably filled with insulating material, e.g. plastic foam, expanded perlite or diatomaceous earth. The walls of the honeycomb may be vapour-pervious or may have small apertures therein, to facilitate the evacuation of the passages. The space enclosed by the panels 2 may house a primary container for the stored materials; the container may be a continuous thin metallic sheet applied to and supported by the panels, or it may be made from metal plate of a thickness such that the container need not be so supported.
