Abstract

<PICT:0947963/C3/1> Apparatus for treating coal agglomerates with gases to render them smokeless comprises an inclined column 1 having two rows 2, 3 of inclined slats defining a path 6 therebetween for the passage under gravity of the coal, with means for passing gas through the rows 2, 3. The path 6 lies between two compartments 4, 5, one provided with a fire-box 12, the other with a fan 13 which draws gas from the top of compartment 4, through the slats where the coal is oxidized, and delivers the gas via the lower part of the compartment 5 back through the slats to the lower part of the compartment 4 which is connected to a gas-washing apparatus. Coal enters at 14 and leaves by a conveyer 20 in a constant-level water tank 19. The column 1 may be articulated at its bottom and have a slidable connection at 10 with a framework 11. The slats may be apertured, and at least one of the rows may be slidable parallel or perpendicularly to its plane. The bottom row at least may be vibrated, and nozzles for the introduction of gases, e.g. air or water vapour, may be provided. Angles of inclination of 60 degrees and 75 degrees to the horizontal are mentioned for the column 1, the slats being inclined at 30 degrees to the column axis.
