Abstract

Organosilicon polymers are made by reacting isocyanates of the formula: <FORM:0947720/C3/1> wherein R1 and R11 are each an alkyl radical or H and m is 0, 1, 2 or 3, with water or ammonia. The isocyanates used are among those described in Specification 923,581 and are made by reacting Si(NCO)4 with alkylene oxides. Polymer formation can be effected at 10 DEG to 30 DEG C. by allowing the isocyanate to come into contact with water or ammonia, in the form of liquid or vapour. An acidic compound, e.g. BF3, may be added prior to polymer formation if a basic catalyst has been used in the preparation of the isocyanate. In examples polymeric films were formed when (1) tris (2-isocyanatoethoxy) silicon monoisocyanate was flowed in a thin layer over a glass plate exposed to moist air; Si(OCH2.CH.CH3.NCO)4 was exposed (2) to moist air, and (3) to dry gaseous ammonia.
