A method of grinding a workpiece comprises rotating the workpiece about its longitudinal axis, advancing the rotating workpiece across an interrupted grinding face having a plurality of grinding face sections at the workpiece to effect relative traversing movement between each section of the workpiece and the grinding face section with which it is instantaneously in contact and progressively moving the rotating workpiece into said interrupted grinding face as it advances. A centreless grinding machine has a base 14 with a flat bed 15 and an upstanding portion 16. In the latter is journalled a motor-driven spindle 17 carrying a grinding wheel 18 having a number of spaced grinding faces 20 of equal diameter; these may be formed by cutting spaced annular grooves 22 in a single cylindrical grinding wheel. A swivel plate 23 mounted on the bed 15 pivotally receives a pin 24 mounted in the bed; adjusting screws 25, 26 in the swivel plate engage a stud 27 mounted in the bed and extending into a hole 28 in the swivel plate. A lower slide 29 is movable on the swivel plate 23 toward and away from the grinding wheel and is secured in adjusted position by a clamp 29a. A support 39 mounted on the lower slide 29 has a slot 40 in which a blade 41 is clamped by screws 42. An upper slide 30 is movable on the lower slide 29 toward and away from the grinding wheel and is secured in adjusted position by a clamp 30a. The upper slide 30 carries a regulating wheel housing 32 in which is journalled a driven spindle 33 carrying a cylindrical regulating wheel 34; the housing 32 pivots on the flat vertical face 30b of the upper slide 30 about a pivot pin 35 and is secured in adjusted position by bolts 36 threadedly received in the housing 32 and extending through slots 37 in flanges 38 of the upper slide 30. With the swivel plate 23 in a reference position where the axis D of the pivot 35 is at right angles to the axis A of the grinding wheel, the regulating wheel housing 32 is adjusted about the axis D so that the axis C of the regulating wheel is at angle 0 to the axis A of the grinding wheel; the regulating wheel is then trued such that a cylinder resting on the blade 41 arid contacting the grinding wheel along a line will make contact with the regulating wheel along a line parallel to the line of contact between the grinding wheel and the cylinder. The swivel plate 23 is then adjusted through an angle a to give a converging throat. A grinding throat section of constant width immediately before the grinding throat exit may be provided by trueing the grinding wheel as at 51. In a modification the grinding wheel has one or more helical grooves cut therein.
