[Also in Division G5] A turn sensitive device employing a vibrating tuning fork 6 has the tines 10 of the fork mounted intermediate the length of a torsion bar 5 whose ends are secured to a casing 1, a balancing bar 7 or disc being mounted on the stem 5 at a second intermediate point, and the torsional characteristics of the torsion bar 5, the moments of inertia of the fork tines 10 and the balancing member 7 about the longitudinal axis 8,the length of torsion bar 5 and the spacing of the intermediate points is such that the fork tines 10 and member 7 have a natural mode of torsional oscillation at a frequency substantially equal to that of the usual mode of vibration of the fork 6 (e.g. 540 c/s.) and the forces exerted on the casing 1, during such torsional oscillations by the two ends of torsion bar 5 are substantially equal and in opposition to one another. The whole assembly may be machined from a single block of steel or a nickel-chromium-titanium-iron alloy. The mode of torsional oscillation may be such that there are modes at either end and at one intermediate point along the torsion bar 5. Electrostatic or electromagnetic driving means may be provided for the tines and mechanicoelectrical transducers detect the phase and magnitude of the torsional oscillations as an indication of the sense and rate of rotation of the device.
