947,090. Methods of applying predetermined tensions to bolts. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. April 18, 1962 [April 18, 1961], No. 13957/61. Heading F2H. A method of tightening nuts and like internally threaded members on to bolts, studs or screwed shafts &c., with the aid of hydraulic pressure includes the use of an assembly comprising an hydraulic piston 5 and cylinder 4, said cylinder being freely slidable over a bolt 2 to rest on a surface 1 against which the tightening takes place. The piston 5 threadably engages the bolt 2 and has a lower end which may be located in the cylinder 4 in which is subsequently formed an hydraulic chamber 8. Pressure is applied to the bolt 2 via the piston 5 by hydraulic fluid forced through a duct 9 from an externally connected supply at 10. Annular sealing rings 6a, 7a located in channels 6 and 7 respectively prevent leakage between piston and cylinder. The nut 2a may be tightened down when the hydraulic pressure produces elongation of the bolt, said nut being recessed on the underside to provide clearance for said piston. Other embodiments include a hydraulic piston located in specially formed recess in the body of the part upon which the nut is to be tightened. Specification 621,963 is referred to.
