Abstract
In the removal of sulphur impurities from hydrocarbon streams by contacting the streams with molten alkali metal hydroxide containing 5-30% wt. water, to form alkali metal sulphide, the alkali metal hydroxide is regenerated by contacting the sulphide, in the presence of water, with finely divided copper, iron, manganese, cobalt, calcium, magnesium, molybdenum, lead, tin, zinc, tungsten, antimony, or bismuth, or their oxides or hydroxides, or mixtures thereof. The regeneration may be effected simultaneously with the purification, or the alkali metal sulphide formed separated and then regenerated, for example by employing the metal, oxide, or hydroxide as a fixed bed. The metal, oxide or hydroxide may be regenerated by roasting to give the oxide, which may be reduced to the metal, or by converting to the sulphate, either with H2SO4 or by air oxidation, and then electrolysed or reduced with hydrogen or precipitated with ammonia, or the sulphide may be suspended in aqueous solution and treated with air to regenerate the oxide and form sulphur as by-product. Specifications 913,729 and 913,730 are referred to.ALSO:Sulphur impurities are removed from hydrocarbon streams by contacting, preferably at 300-1000 DEG F., with a molten alkali-metal hydroxide containing from 5 to 30% of water to form an alkali metal sulphide, and regenerating the hydroxide by contacting the sulphide in the presence of water with a finely divided solid material or materials selected from the group: copper, iron, manganese, cobalt, calcium, magnesium, molybdenum, lead, tin, zinc, tungsten, antimony, bismuth and oxides and hydroxides of the foregoing. The alkali metal sulphide in the hydrocarbon stream may be separated in a first stage and the regenerated in a second stage. Specifications 913,729 and 913,730 are referred to.
