Abstract
946,285. Crimping pliers. AMP Inc. Nov. 22, 1962 [Dec. 4, 1961], No. 44143/62. Heading B4W. A press tool e.g. for crimping connectors to conductors comprises a pair of dies relatively movable in a tool head towards each other by reciprocable force-applying means, in which the dies are relatively movable transversely of the time of action of the force applying means. The tool comprises a " C "-shaped head comprising a pair of parallel spaced plates having upper and lower arms 4, 6 and a handle 10 fitted to the arm 6, a block 32 slidably mounted between the arms 6 by a pair of guide plates 34 having upper and lower slots 40, 36 which engage bushed pins 16, 18 and which are secured to the block by pins 33, 56 and a hand lever 76 pivoted on the pin 16 which also passes through side plates 70 and a cam block 68. A cam surface 66 engages a roller 64 mounted at the end of a link 62 of a toggle mechanism the other end being pivotally mounted between the extensions 6 on a pin 18, the link 62 is also pivoted at a knee joint 59 to a link 58 pivotally connected at 56 to the block 32. The link 62 is connected via a spring 61 to the handle 10 having a ratchet device 78, which serves to bias the toggle mechanism into the broken condition. Movable crimping dies 41, 43 are connected to a plate 42, via a bracket 48, which extends downwardly and is adjustably secured via a slot 44 to the block 32 and a screw 50 adjusts the height of the dies relative to the block. The slotted upper end of the plate 42 extends through a slot defined by a bracket 26 and a block 12 and about a rivet 27, secured to the lower end of the bracket 26 is a bracket 28 on which are fitted a pair of fixed dies 30, 31. In operation a connector and conductor to be crimped are placed between the dies and the handles are closed to effect movement of the follower 64 along the cam 66 and straightening of the toggle mechanism to move the dies 41, 43 vertically into engagement with the dies 30, 31 to effect crimping.
