Headings B5L and B5N] A shaped body is made from one or more sheets 60 of wood veneer, wood hardboard or composition hardboard by placing sheets of material on a flexible tensioned band 24 and under a male former 17, lowering the former so that the band bends the sheets about the former and a lower platen 12 presses the band and sheets against the former and then moving a pair of platens 20, 21 to press the band and sheets against opposite sides of the former. The former 17, of wood or insulating material, is removably carried on the ram 14 of an hydraulic or pneumatic cylinder 13 and the platens 20, 21 are operated by cylinders 22 and 23. The metal band 24 is wrapped round rollers 25 and 26 and tension is applied to it by belts 36, 37 and 48, 49 passing round pulleys 35, 37 and connected to weights 44. The rollers are carried by wedge-shaped crossheads 61, 62, which are operated by cylinders 27-32 to close over the top end of the shell by wedging under surfaces 63, 64 on a platen 15 on the ram 14. The band may be heated by passing current through it and electric heaters may be disposed in or near the surfaces of the mould 17. When bending hardboards, the boards may be dipped in water and left in a damp atmosphere for about 48 hours. Shells made similarly can be cut into reinforcing strips for fitting round the inside of the shaped bodies during their formation or round the outside after their formation. Hardboard bodies can be covered with a veneer layer in the same machine as used to form the body or a thermoplastic or heat-curing layer can be applied.
