Abstract

A glass for sealing directly to tungsten or to other materials with similar thermal expansion characteristics, consists of, in percentages by weight, SiO2 72.5-77.5; B2O3 14.0-16.5; PbO 4.0-7.0; K2O 6.5-7.5; Al2O3 0-2.5; BaO or SrO or ZnO 0-1; with refining agent (KCl, Sb2O5 or As2O3) 0.1-0.3, the ratio of SiO2 to B2O3 being in the range 4.5: 1 to 5.5 : 1. The glass may be used for sealing in of tungsten rods, either to glass as above or a bead of the glass between the rod and the normal borosilicate glass. The tungsten rod may be coated with a very thin film of alkali-free high silica glass before sealing. Specifications 583,208 and 597,292 are referred to.
