A route progress indicator on a vehicle comprises mechanism for driving a chart E,with a route marked thereon, in synchronism with the vehicle, whereby the instantaneous position of the vehicle along the route may be indicated by the intersection of a cursor Q with the marked route and wherein the chart can be adjusted independently of the drive mechanism, the chart can be reversed to indicate the position of the vehicle along the route when traversed in the opposite direction and a variable ratio gear-box A, Fig. 1 (not shown) in the drive mechanism enables the indicator to be adapted for use with different vehicles. The drive mechanism includes a dog clutch C which enables the chart spool assembly to be withdrawn to facilitate re-loading. Screw-and-nut means allow a limited range of fine adjustment of the cursor Q, while a solid drive clutch V in the reduction gear-box can be released through knurled nut W to allow for coarse adjustment of the chart E. To give advance warning of impending changes along the route, perforations are provided to one side of the chart to permit spring loaded contacts which bear on the chart to pass through, and touch metal plate Z to complete electrical circuits to warning lamps.
