Abstract

945,179. Tankers. G. & J. WEIR Ltd. May 18, 1962 [June 17, 1961], No. 21971/61. Heading B7A. [Also in Divisions F1 and G1] A system for pumping liquids into and out of the tanks of liquid carrying cargo ships such as oil tankers, comprises at least one pump 1 (see Division F1), located on the deck 2 of the ship on top of or adjacent a main tank 3 or tanks, with its suction 7 in communication with the interior of an auxiliary tank 4, a jet pump 8 located in or adjacent the bottom of the main tank or tanks, a branch 9 connecting the discharge 10 from the pump 1 to the suction of the or each jet pump 8, and a discharge duct 11 from the or each jet pump connected to the interior of the auxiliary tank to allow liquid to circulate through the pump 1, the or one selected jet pump 8, the auxiliary tank 4 and back to the pump 1. The auxiliary tank 4 may instead be located immediately underneath the deck 2 or it may constitute part of the casing of the pump 1. Where the pump 1 is associated with more than one main tank 3 there is only one auxiliary tank, as many duets 11 as main tanks and each valved to enable the appropriate one to be selected, and each main tank has its own jet pump 8 with a branch pipe 9 branched after throttle valve 13 and valved to allow the appropriate of the jet pump.
