Abstract

<FORM:0944623/C3/1> Metal scrap contaminated with combustible matter such as oil, paper or plastic is cleaned by feeding it down a shoot 19 to a rotary chamber 1, where the combustible matter is at least partly burned or volatilized in a controlled current of air. A jacket 10, initially heated by gases from a furnace 11, maintains the temperature within the rotary drum within the range 300-450 DEG C., and a pilot burner 21 initiates the partial combustion of the contaminants. The air flowing through the furnace 1 from the discharge end carries fumes to a smoke chamber 2 leading to a secondary combustion chamber 5 where a burner 6 completes the combustion with air from an adjustable inlet 7. The jacket 10 may be supplied with cooling air from a blower 13. Dampers 9, 17, 12, 14 in the flue outlet, the jacket outlet 16 and the inlets to the jacket 10 control the flow of air through the furnace from adjustable inlets at the discharge end, and the flow of heating or cooling gas through the jacket. Lifters of varying inclinations are arranged in the zones 23, 24, 25 of the rotary drum and an ash pocket 4 is disposed below the smoke box 2.
