An adjustable chair has a back 3, pivoted at 2, and to which is pivotally attached a forwardly extending rod 5, levers 12, 21 pivotally connected to the chair arm at 11, 25 respectively and two tension springs 8, 28 connecting the lever 12 to the levers 5, 21. The springs urge lever 21 into a position where the clamping centres 23, 24 grip rod 5 to prevent it from moving backwards, the clamping action being released by moving lever 12 upwards.
