Abstract

944,516. Nuclear fuel elements. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Feb. 19, 1962 [March 6, 1961], No. 8177/61. Heading G6C. In a polygonal helical type fuel element 1, i.e. one having helical heat transfer fins 4 intersected by longitudinal splitter fins 5a, 5b, 5c, 5d of greater radial depth, each splitter fin has in the region of its outer edge a flange, all the flanges 6a, 6b, 6c, 6d extending in the same rotational direction. The fuel element shown in plan view in Fig. 2, against the longitudinal coolant flow, has the fins 4 of right-hand helix and the flanges 6a, 6b, 6c, 6d extending in the same direction, i.e. clockwise, in close proximity with the wall of the fuel channel 2. The splitter fins 5a, 5b, 5c, 5d divide the channel 2 into zones A, B, C, D, causing intermixing to occur between the coolant in between the fins 4 and the coolant in each zone, also causing the coolant in each zone to vortex (as indicated by the arrowed flow loop 9 shown in zone A), to give improved heat transfer characteristics. The flanges deflect the vortexing coolant away from the wall of the channel 2 in the regions of the splitter fins and thereby reduce the passage of coolant from one zone to another, thus reducing the tendency of the fuel element to rattle. In zone A, for example, the flange 6a deflects the vortexing coolant (as indicated by arrow 10) away from the channel wall in the region of the splitter fin 5a.
