Abstract
943,856. Electric selective signalling systems. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Aug. 20, 1962 [Aug. 30, 1961], No. 31280/61. Heading G4H. In a position encoder first and second conductors are wound through the gaps between the teeth of a ferro-magnetic core, and a small ferromagnetic element is mounted for movement adjacent the ends of the teeth so that the reluctance of the magnetic circuit completed by the element is reduced, the coupling between the first conductor and the second conductors in each gap being characteristic of the relative positions of the element and the core. Fig. 2 illustrates a cross-section of a shaft position encoder. Each gap contains second conductors 10-14 and first conductor 8 or 9. The shaft carries a ferro-magnetic element 5 which is sufficiently large to bridge two teeth at all times. The wiring of the encoder, Fig. 3 (not shown), is such that if A.C. is applied to conductors 8, 9, Fig. 5, signals appear in conductors 10-14 in a combination unique to the current position of the shaft. After phase detection in units 29, such as described in Specification 919, 835, a parallel mode two state signal appears at 30-34. The embodiment of Fig. 5 includes a second, and identical, encoder 27<SP>1</SP> which is coupled to the shaft driving encoder 27 by a 16: 1 reduction gear. Encoders 27<SP>1</SP> and 27 thus provide coarse and fine signals respectively. To compensate for back-lash in the gears and to ensure accurate changeover from one coarse position to the next for each sixteen steps of the fine scale, the most significant digit of the fine scale is used to energize either winding 8<SP>1</SP> or 9<SP>1</SP> (which together constitute the first conductor) and which correspond to the even-numbered and oddnumbered gaps in the coarse encoder. If a serial mode signal is required, D. C.pulses are applied in turn to the second conductors, a serial mode signal then appearing on the first conductor.
