Abstract

<PICT:0943500/C1/1> Dielectric heating apparatus comprises a waveguide horn 15 to be located closely adjacent the structure 18 to be heated, wherein provision is made for passing a forced air current through the waveguide and cut through the gap between the mouth of the horn and the structure 18, to carry away water vapour as this is liberated. As shown, the apparatus is used for drying a porous wall 18 and thus for destroying living organisms, e.g. dry rot, or other fungus and insect pests, but it may also be used to speed up the curing of concrete. Compressed air is fed into the waveguide 14 through a non-radiating slot 16. This air may be cold to protect the surface of wall 18 or warmed prior to use, e.g. by using it to cool magnetron 11.
