Abstract

A composition for coating paper &c. (see Division B2) comprises silica, barium sulphate and starch, and may contain also a binder. The coating compositions used in the examples: comprise (1) water, colloidal silica, blanc fixe, corn starch and polyvinyl alcohol; and (2 and 3) water, colloidal silica, blanc fixe, rice starch, casein, borax and ammonia. Specification 647,197 is referred to.ALSO:A precoated sheet, for use in making a light-sensitive reproduction sheet, comprises a base sheet covered by a discontinuous layer of a substantially uniform mixture of silica, barium sulphate and starch in the proportion of one part by weight of silica to between one and twenty parts by weight of barium sulphate and starch. The base sheet may be of paper, fabric, cellulose acetate, polyester or polyvinyl resin. The particles of silica may be of colloidal size, those of barium sulphate may be larger. The coating may also contain a binder, e.g. casein and its salts, gelatin, emulsions of polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl alcohol, gum arabic or the like. The coating may be applied in aqueous suspension.
