An uncorrected colour separation 11 comprising either a coloured positive proof of an original colour separation transparency or the coloured transparency itself and a positive proof 13 of a corrected colour separation are scanned by photo-electric devices 16, 17 to derive signals which are combined differentially in a subtracter circuit 27, the resulting signal being applied to modulate a light source to expose a photo-sensitive record. The photosensitive record may comprise only a sheet of photo-sensitive film, in which case there is produced a masking record for use in conjunction with the original uncorrected colour separation. Alternatively, the photo-sensitive film may be combined with and arranged for exposure through an uncorrected colour-separation record, in which case a corrected colour record is produced directly. By appropriate selection of the uncorrected record, the corrected record may be either a positive or a negative. The invention is stated to be of use in permitting uncorrected records to be corrected so as to match proofs which have been accepted as satisfactory. According to a feature of the invention, the photo-sensitive devices are provided with filters (carried by turrets 18 and 19) the light transmission characteristics of which are substantially complementary to the colours of separations 11 and 13 so that the colouring in the separations appears black to the photoelectric cells. A meter 30 indicates the instantaneous amplitude of the correction signal. Potentiometers 28, 29 permit calibration of the apparatus in accordance with the characteristics of separations 11 and 13. Specification 891,978 is referred to in connection with details of subtracter circuit 27.
