Abstract
941,892. Packaging. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. May 4, 1962 [May 4, 1961], No. 16213/61. Heading B8C. [Also in Division F3] A process for the continuous production of a cylindrical column of plastic material within a closely fitting tube comprises the drawing of a strip of flexible material obliquely around a hollow mandrel to form a helically wound tube, the tube thus formed being continuously rotated while the plastic material is extruded through the bore of the mandrel into the tube, the rate of feed being such that the advancing tube is completely filled. Subsequently the filled tube is divided into the desired lengths. In Fig. 1 explosive 11 is fed by a worm 13 through an extrusion nozzle 14 into a tube 15 formed from strips 16 drawn by an endless belt 17 on to the mandrel 14. A wheel 27 rotated by the explosive controls the motor 20 driving the belt 17. Compressed air admitted through a pipe 24 forms a layer 22 around the explosive as in Specification 919,479 and escapes through passages 25, 26. Air at higher pressure entering through pipe 29 prevents the escape of layer 22 around the wheel 27. A knife 32 which travels in the direction of extrusion severs the tube into the required lengths. Bearings 31 support the filled tubes prior to discharge into a shoot 33.
