A portable refuse bin comprises, in combination, a casing or frame 1 on the lower part of which a refuse container 2 is pivotally mounted, a pedal 2<SP>11</SP> which, when depressed, causes the container 2 to tilt towards the operator, and a lid 3 pivoted to the upper part of the frame 1 to close the container 2 having at its pivotal axis two levers 3<SP>1</SP>, 3<SP>11</SP> arranged so that one is struck by the rim 2<SP>1</SP>, when the container 2 is tilted towards the operator to raise and open the lid 3, the other being struck by the rim 2<SP>1</SP> after the lid 3 has been so raised and the container 2 has returned to its initial position, to cause the lid 3 to become closed. The levers 3<SP>1</SP>, 3<SP>11</SP> are such that the lid 3 is tilted until its centre of gravity lies beyond the vertical line through its pivotal axis at 3 degrees so that it tends to drop back in the direction opposite to the direction of closing, to bear against a support 1<SP>11</SP>, the container being left free. The container 2 is mounted on the frame 1 by pins 2<SP>0</SP> in open bearings 1<SP>1</SP> and has a handle 4.
