Abstract

A cigarette filter core comprises a rod composed of filaments of thermoplastic material substantially orientated axially of the rod, portions of the filaments being irregularly inflated and the filaments being bonded to one another by adhesion of the inflated portions. The thermoplastic material is preferably a polyolefine, such as polyethylene, and contains a blowing agent. The material is extruded through a plurality of die orifices to produce a plurality of filaments having small bubbles formed therein by the blowing agent. While the filaments are still in a soft condition the bubbles are permitted to expand to form irregular enlargements of the cross-section of the filaments at intervals along their length and the filaments are subsequently gathered together to form a rod in which enlarged portions of adjoining filaments adhere together at intervals along the length of the filaments.
