Abstract

940,801. Change-speed and clutch control. TWIN DISC CLUTCH CO. Sept. 23, 1960, No. 32812/60. Headings F2D and F2L. In a hydromechanical vehicle transmission variation of the torque converter slip is used to indicate when gear changing is required or to effect such gear changing automatically. In the arrangement shown high and low speed ratio governors 14, 15 are driven by the converter input and output shafts 16, 17 and effect automatic control of the hydraulic clutches 109, 110 of a two-speed gear. The high speed governor 14 comprises two aligned shafts 26, 34, the former of which is in two portions connected by a magnetic clutch 23, 25. The shafts 26, 34 are connected to the converter shafts 16, 17 by belts 18, 19, and the gear ratios are such that the shafts rotate in synchronism at a predetermined low value of converter slip. The shafts carry lugs 29, 37 on which are mounted electric contacts 30, 38 wired to slip rings and brushes 32, 40 and 33, 41 whereby in the event of shaft 26 slowing down in relation to shaft 34 the contacts engage to operate relay contacts 72, 73 to energize a solenoid valve 94 and admit pressure liquid to the high gear clutch 109. The governor 15 is similar to governor 14 except that it operates at high slip and the arrangement of contacts 50, 57 is reversed so that they engage when shaft 43 speeds up in relation to shaft 44, to operate relay contacts 79, 80, solenoid valve 95 and the low gear clutch 110. Instead of operating valve relays the electric contacts may illuminate signal lamps to warn the driver when gear change is required, Fig. 7 (not shown). In a further arrangement, Figs. 8-11 (not shown), the slip rings and contacts are duplicated to operate a four-speed gear.
