Abstract

940,689. Bending; stamping; riveting; forging. AMP Inc. Sept. 25, 1962 [Oct. 5, 1961], No. 36358/62. Addition to 918,515. Headings B3E, B3H, B3Q and B3U. A metal working press is substantially the same as that described in the parent Specification but incorporates modifications in which a finger piece secured to the ram is manually slidable relative to the housing to advance the ram and also incorporates an improved ram return mechanism. A finger piece 54 is slidably mounted on the housing 2 and secured to the lower end of the ram 10. Upward movement of the finger raises the ram 10 causing the crimping dies to engage a female portion 23 and partially straighten the toggle linkages prior to the power operation of the tool. The return mechanism comprises a pair of parallel plates 61 positioned adjacent the outer sides of the pairs of links, each plate having a hook 64, notch 65, toe 66 and an extension 67. The plates are biased downwardly by springs 68 and the notches 65 engage pins 69 secured to the links 42. A pair of latch plates 70 are positioned on the outer sides of the plates 61 and pivoted at 27, each plate having a slot 72 which slidably engages the pivot pins 33, 45 and a shoulder 73. In operation the plates 70 are lifted by the ram 10 and the plates 61 lifted by the pins 69 against the springs 68 which also bias their hooks 64 to engage the shoulders 73 on the plates 70. On completion of the working stroke the cam block is lowered with the piston causing the pins 69 to disengage the notched 65 thus allowing the springs 68 to retract the plates 61, 70 and lower the ram 10. A cam face 67<SP>1</SP> on the plates 61 engages the pins 45 and moves the plates laterally to disengage the hooks 64 from the shoulders 73 and allow the plates 61 to further retract until their toes 66 engage the face of a separator plate 40 which tilts the plates to ensure that disengagement of the plates is effected.
