Abstract
<PICT:0940517/C3/1> Acid pickle containing H2 SO4 and ferrous sulphate, is regenerated by (a) crystallizing the crude pickle and re-dissolving the ferrous sulphate so obtained to form a substantially neutral solution which is then (b) admitted as catholyte in a three compartment cell formed by diaphragms, the central compartment preventing drift of H ions from anolyte to catholyte which is maintained at pH of 3 by regulating the flow, (c) passing a current to deposit iron on the cathode, the sulphuric acid formed passing to the central compartment with some ferrous sulphate, which is then drawn off, and recycled to the pickle supply, preferably after removing some at least of the ferrous sulphate. In a suitable apparatus, pickle liquor is continuously circulated from a tank 1 through a heater 3, and a part is injected into a sprinkling tower 4 against a current of cold air, which takes off some water. The concentrated liquor is further cooled in a vessel 7, from which the centrifuged discharged liquor returns to the tank 1 and the separated ferrous sulphate is fed into a catholyte mixing vessel 11. "Weak pickle acid" containing 20 to 30 g. H2 SO4 per litre is added from a tank 19, and the acid ferrous sulphate solution is "neutralized" by scrap iron in a vessel 12. The restulting catholyte containing 150 g. of iron or more per litre, is fed into compartment 14 of the electrolytic cell, and is maintained at 50 DEG to 70 DEG C., where some iron is deposited on the cathode 15, and the solution passes to the central compartment 17 where it is admixed with H ions from the anode compartment 18. This "weak pickle acid" is fed into the tank 19 and kept hot by circulation through a heater 21. Sulphate ions accumulate in the anode compartment and the regenerated acid passes to the cooling vessel 7. In an alternative process, where the ferrous sulphate separated in the centrifuge is not too acid the treatment with scrap iron is omitted, and the acid from the central compartment 17 of the cell is fed directly to the cooling vessel 7.
