Abstract

940, 79. Sewing-machines. G. M. PFAFF A. G. Sept. 29, 1961 [Oct. 18, 1960], No. 35004/61. Heading D1G. A sewing machine for sewing a label or similar article to a fabric includes means for folding the edges of the label before stitching, the means comprising a retractable folding template and a work folding clamp movable past the edges of the template and having relatively displaceable, inwardly directed claws. The template 49 is shown in Fig. 1 in the retracted position occupied while the machine is sewing an already folded label 63 to a fabric 65. When the work feeding foot 62 is raised and the machine stopped the template, which is resiliently attached to one end of a lever associated with the stopping and starting mechanism, moves forward to resiliently engage the underside of the foot 64. The template is then manually depressed to permit an unfolded label to be inserted between label and foot, and a handle 25 is manually depressed to cause the jaws 28 of the folding clamp 29 to descend and fold the label ends around and beneath the edges of the template. The foot is then lowered, which allows the folding clamp to move up and away from the work, the template retracting as the machine is started up. The clamp 29 comprises two arms 27 spring pressed together and each pivoted to a block 24 and provided with a notch 32 on the inner edge 27a and a projection 30. The block 24 is slidable on a rod 18 slidably supported at its upper end in a bolt 20 attached to the frame of the sewing machine, its lower end being secured in a member 15 attached to a two part plate 11 connected with the presser foot lifting lever, not shown, to rise and fall with the foot 64. Extending from the member 15 are two projections 17 which respectively engage the inner edge 27a of the adjacent arm 27. A bifurcated locking member 22 slidably mounted on the rod 18 has surfaces 22a which taper upwards towards each other and co-operate with projections 30. When the foot has been raised and the handle 25 on the block 24 is depressed to operate the clamp 29 the arms 27 will move downwardly, surfaces 27a co-operating with projections 17 to spread the arms until the projections arrive at the recesses 32, the arms then being guided by the engagement of the surfaces 22a with the projections 30. As claws 28 pass the edges of the template 29 projections 30 pass beneath the member 22 and lock the clamp in the down position and the arms are moved in by the spring 31 to fold the edges of the label under the template (see Fig. 4). Lowering of the foot 64, prior to stitching the label, lowers the plate 11, the projections 17 engaging the edges of recesses 32 to spread the arms apart and release the projections 30 from beneath the member 22, a coil spring 23 then raising the clamp back to its original position. Specification 940,078 is referred to.
