Abstract
940,050. Insulation for dynamo-electric machines. EPOXYLITE CORPORATION. Oct. 26, 1961 [April 17, 1961], No. 38322/61. Heading H2A. The winding slots of the magnetic core of a dynamo-electric machine have disposed in them two coaxial tubes surrounding the windings in the slots, the outer tube being of non- magnetic metallic foil and the inner tube of dielectric insulating material. As shown in Fig. 3, a sheet of metallic foil 20 such as aluminium or stainless steel is placed in a slot 11 of a laminated core so as to line the slot and a thin sheet of dielectric insulating material 30 such as paper, varnished fabric, glass, mica or polyester resin, is laid loosely within the metallic sheet. After inserting the conductive windings 40 in the slot, for which a central stick 50 may be provided, the edges 31, 32 of the dielectric material are folded over to form an overlapping seam. The edges 21, 22 of the metal foil are then folded over and bonded to each other by an epoxy resin and the tubes are kept in position by wedges 60. The dielectric tube preferably extends beyond each axial end of the metallic tube, Fig. 5 (not shown) so as to prevent the windings shorting with the metallic foil. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 6, sheets 20a, 30a, identical to sheets 20, 30 respectively except that they have a shorter circumference, are inserted in the slots and windings 40 emplaced therein. The insulating material 30a is first closed to form a complete tube by placing over the gap at its upper end a curved strip 61 of insulating material which overlaps the ends of the sheet and is bonded thereto by adhesive material. Similarly the gap at the top of the foil sheet 20a is closed by a strip of foil 62 bonded to the foil sheet by an epoxy resin. The winding may be encapsulated in the tubes in an insulating material and the axial ends of the tubes are secured and covered by an epoxy resin.
