Abstract

940,004. Limb supports. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. May 7, 1962 [May 5, 1961], No. 16365/61. Heading A5R. A limb support comprises a flat-based X-ray permeable channel member, of such width that a limb may lie in it clear of the sides, and has a foot or hand supporting surface at one end of the channel. A support 1 for a leg has side portions 3 upstanding from a base 2 and at one end a foot-supporting portion 4 which is taller than the side portions. A similar arm support 9 is open at both ends and has a downwardly sloping extension 10 of the base foi supporting a hand. The supports are made of glass fibre reinforced by plastic, may have a detachable padded lining and may be strapped on a limb. The supports are used in combination with a sling 5 of flexible textile material e.g. nylon, which is open at one or both ends. Loops along the edges of the sling enable the limb to be raised from or lowered into the support. A resilient knee flexion piece (Fig. 8, not shown) may be disposed on the base of the support.
