Abstract

939,973. Controlling nuclear reactors. ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA A.B. Aug. 22, 1961 [Aug. 24, 1960], No. 30181/61. Class 39(4). Drive means for the control rod of a heterogeneous nuclear reactor comprises a motordriven screw-and-nut mechanism, means for holding the rod connected with the nut for its function as a regulating control-rod and for releasing the rod from the nut when the former is in its uppermost position, and electromagnetic means which hold the rod in this position in readiness for its function as an emergency control-rod. In the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 and 1a, the control-rod 1 in the form of a tube is supported by the nut 5 which has an inwardly projecting shoulder 24 resting upon balls 21 pressed outwards by levers 22 mounting pivots 23 which carry a ring 18 in recesses of which the balls 21 are mounted. A spring 19 is mounted between the levers 22 and a flange 17 on a supporting tube 16 which extends from the lower end of the nut 5, the supporting tube 16 thus carrying the ring 18. The nut 5 is threaded on a screw 4 driven by a motor 3 and is prevented from rotating with the screw 4 by splines 12 which extend through slots 13 in an upper magnetic part 14 of the control rod 1 into slots 15 (Fig. 3, not shown), in the inner wall of a surrounding tube 2. When the nut 5 is raised, it carries the control rod 1 to its uppermost position when the part 14 is opposite an electromagnet 8 which holds the rod 1 in position. Since the motor 3 is still rotating, the spring 19 is compressed and the levers 22 swing inwards to allow the balls 21 to move away from the shoulder 24. The rod 1 then acts as an emergency control-rod, interruption of the current to the electromagnet 8 releasing the rod which falls under gravity into the reactor. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 5), the means for holding the rod 1 connected with the nut 5 comprises pawls 31 pivoted on a bearing member fixed to the supporting tube 16 and engaging recesses 26 in the nut 5. A sleeve 33 ensures that the pawls 31 are turned outwards when the rod 1 reaches its uppermost position.
