Abstract

A process for the manufacture of dinitrotoluene, containing the 2,4 and 2,6 isomers in the ratio 78.5:21.5 to 80.8:19.2, by two stage nitration of toluene is characterised by the use of mixtures of nitric acid, sulphuric acid and water which give rise in the first and second stages to spent acids of strength (calculated as sulphuric acid) 70-83% and at least 79%, respectively.
