Abstract
939,765. Production of hydrogen and carbon monoxide. M. W. KELLOGG CO. May 18, 1961 [May 19, 1960], No. 18127/61. Drawings to Specification. Classes 1(2) and 32 A process for the production of hydrogen and carbon monoxide comprises introducing a hydrocarbon feed and a combustion-supporting gas into an externally heated partial combustion zone maintained at above 2500‹F. by burning an auxiliary fuel at a higher temperature in a burning zone maintained in indirect heat exchange with the combustion zone, said combustion-supporting gas containing at least sufficient total oxygen to satisfy the requirement for conversion of said hydrocarbon feed to hydrogen and carbon monoxide, which are recovered from the combustion zone. Flue gases, at a higher temperature than the combustion zone, may additionally be recovered from the burning zone. The combustion zone is preferably maintained at 0-500 p.s.i.g. and 2500‹-3000‹F. The feeds to the combustion zone may be preheated, at least in part by indirect heat exchange with the flue gases from the burning zone. By employing air as at least a part of the combustion-supporting gas and subjecting the products from the combustion zone to a shift conversion, a gas containing nitrogen and hydrogen suitable for use in ammonia synthesis gas may be obtained. Suitable combustion-supporting gases are mixtures of air and steam, oxygen and steam, and oxygen and carbon dioxide. The gas mixture product may also be employed to reduce iron oxide to sponge iron.
