Abstract

939,276. Automatic position control. EXPRESS PATENT CO. (LIVERPOOL) Ltd. Aug. 10, 1962 [Aug. 18, 1961], No. 29803/61. Class 38 (4). In a machine for superimposing layers of cloth by means of a reciprocable carriage, lateral deviation of the edge of the cloth is detected by a photo-electric device and automatically corrected by an electric servomotor. In Fig. 1 a carriage 12 formed by rods 14 joining end members 13 is reciprocated on rails 10a so that cloth from a roll 20 is piled in layers for cutting on the table just above roller 22. Three adjustable forked members 50 each having a light source and photo-cell are associated with the edge of the cloth so that if the lateral position of the latter deviates to obstruct the light path in the lowermost member or to permit light to pass in the next higher member, relays are operated to run an electric motor 30 in such a direction that a lead screw and nut are adjusted to correct the position of a cloth supporting member 18 by moving it relative to carriage 12 on rollers 25. Motor 30 is provided with limit switches 56 and the highest of the three members 50 ensures that motor 30 is de-energized at the end of the supply of cloth.
