Abstract

The invention comprises polymeric metal salts containing the repeating unit <FORM:0939191/III/1> where M is a Group VIb metal atom (Denning), X is carbon, sulphur or pentavalent nitrogen, phosphorus, arsenic, antimony or bismuth, A is oxygen or sulphur and is oxygen when X is sulphur, R may be a hydroxyl or a divalent oxo group, R1 may be a hydroxyl group and p is 0 or 1. They are prepared by reacting a Group VIb metal carbonyl with oxy or thio acids of carbon or of pentavalent nitrogen, phosphorus, arsenic, antimony or bismuth. Temperatures of about 75 DEG -200 DEG C. and pressures of about 1-20 atoms may be used and an organic solvent and/or inert atmosphere may be used. The products are stated to be solid lubricants.ALSO:The invention comprises polymeric metal salts containing the repeating unit. <FORM:0939191/IV(a)/1> where M is a Group VIb metal atom (Deming) (chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, uranium), X is carbon, sulphur or pentavalent nitrogen, phosphorus, arsenic, antimony or bismuth, A is oxygen or sulphur and is oxygen when X is sulphur, R is a monovalent lower aryl, lower alkyl, lower cycloalkyl, lower aralkyl, lower alkaryl, cyclopentadienyl, indenyl group or one of these groups substituted with alkoxy or halogen groups, containing up to 12 carbon atoms, a hydroxyl or a divalent oxo group, R1 is a lower aryl, lower alkyl, lower cycloalkyl, lower aralkyl, lower alkaryl, cyclopentadienyl, indenyl group or one of these groups substituted with alkoxy or halogen groups, containing up to 12 carbon atoms or a hydroxyl group, and p is 0 or 1. They are prepared by reacting a Group VIb metal carbonyl with oxy or thio acids of carbon or of pentavalent nitrogen, phosphorus, arsenic, antimony or bismuth, or oxyacids of sulphur. Suitable acids include phosphonic, phosphinic, sulphonic and carboxylic acids. Temperatures of about 75 DEG -200 DEG C. and pressures of about 1-20 atmos are preferred and an organic solvent and/or inert atmosphere may be used. Specified solvents are aliphatic hydrocarbons and ethers, particularly highly polar ethers such as diethylene glycol dimethylether. The products are stated to be solid lubricants. Examples describe the preparation of polymers from molybdenum hexacarboxyl and acetic, propionic, octoic, p-fluorobenzoic, cyclohexylcarboxylic, benzenesulphonic, diphenylphosphinic, perfluorobutyric, benzoic, o-toluic and anisic acids.
