[Also in Group V] Polyurethane or polyvinyl chloride is foamed in situ within an extensible envelope, the shape of which is controlled during foaming. As shown in Fig. 4, to produce a cushion, rubber sheets 11 are clamped at 12, softened by radiant heaters (Fig. 1, not shown), and latent foaming polyurethane injected between the sheets. They are then placed between heated, perforated, metal plates (see Fig. 3, not shown) until the polyurethane begins to foam, and the sheets are then placed between mould halves 18, through which vacuum can be applied at 19 until the foam has set. As shown in Fig. 7, a polyvinyl chloride tube 23 is extruded simultaneously with latent-foaming polyurethane 25. The extruded filled tube is flattened by rollers 29 and passed through a shaping die 30. Vacuum may be applied through the walls of the die. The outer envelope may be stripped from the foam and may also be made of polythene, nylon, polycarbonate, polypropylene and polyethylene terephthalate.
