Abstract
938,538. Friction brakes. FAWICK CORPORATION. July 24, 1962, No. 28495/62. Class 103 (1). [Also in Group XXIV] In a friction clutch or brake wherein a rubber rim 17, with or without friction shoes, of a fluidpressure distensible annulus 10 carried on a flanged member 13 fast with a driving member 11 is expanded, or contracted, into engagement with a driven drum 12, the rubber rim 17 is retracted on clutch disengagement by sinuously coiled endless annular metal wire springs 20, 21, embedded and bonded within the rim 17. The springs 20, 21 tend to restrain radial movement of intermediate rubber portions 17a of the rim 17 between the spring coils, so that the rubber portions 17a are stressed higher for clutch engagement providing greater self-return action of the rim 17 on disengagement. The crosssection of the wire springs 20, 21 may be round or, in Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), of elliptical form having the major axis radially disposed, providing increased radial thickness of the portions 17a to further improve self-return. The fluidpressure may be compressed air or liquid supplied through one or more pipes 16, and the annulus 10 is of cord reinforced vulcanized soft rubber.
