Abstract

937,068. Surgical drainage. CHEMETRON CORPORATION. Jan. 19, 1960 [Jan. 26, 1959], No. 1965/60. Class 81 (2). A device for producing a cyclically interrupted vacuum for surgical drainage purposes comprises a vacuum-operated motor which alternately connects a source of vacuum to the motor itself and to an outlet which is coupled to the drainage bottle. The motor comprises two bellows 44, 46 connected together through a restricted orifice 48 and filled with oil. The bellows 44 is enclosed within a chamber 40 so that when this is evacuated, bellows 44 expands and 46 contracts at a rate depending on the flow of oil through the orifice 46. The end plate of bellows 46 is connected by a linkage with a slide valve 32 and, when this is in the position shown, vacuum, applied to pipe 16, is connected by pipe 36 and through the valve 32 to the chamber 40. The bellows are consequently drawn upwards until the valve is moved over to its upper position, against stop 60, where the vacuum through pipe 36 is connected through pipe 34 to the outlet 14, which leads to the vacuum bottle. At the same time, the chamber 40 is vented to atmosphere and the bellows system 44, 46 is drawn outward by a spring 56. Vacuum regulators 20, 18 are connected to the ducts 16, 14, respectively, to prevent the application of an excessive suction to the patient and, in addition, adjustment of the regulator 20, by determining the degree of vacuum in the chamber 40, controls the rate at which the bellows return to their upper position and thus the proportion of the cycle during which suction is applied to the bottle. The regulators comprise diaphragms which are normally balanced by spring pressure but which, on the application of a rarefaction in excess of the set value, are drawn upwards to close the corresponding suction pipes.
