Abstract
936,617. Dynamo-electric machine cooling. C. A. PARSONS & CO. Ltd. Nov. 17, 1960 [Jan. 6, 1960], No. 509/60. Class 35. In a dynamo-electric machine having winding conductors 2, Fig. 3, cooled by a cooling fluid which passes through radial ducts therein, each of at least some of the ducts is formed of a series of separate connected-together holes 2a which are radially staggered to increase turbulence and hence heat transfer. The staggering may be slight or greater such as to require transverse channels to convey the fluid between adjacent holes which channels may be in either the interconductor insulation 3 or in the conductors themselves and be shaped as in Fig. 8. Each conductor may be subdivided into two or three elements A, B, C, Fig. 11, and the ducts may comprise combinations of round and elongated holes 2a, Fig. 9, or have serrations 9, Fig. 10, to promote a swirling fluid flow. Passages 6a in the slot wedges 6 are threaded for the introduction of flow-balancing restrictions or plugs not shown. The invention is shown applied to the rotor of a large turbine-driven A.C. generator for power station use, but could also be applied to the stator.
