Abstract

936,382. Cylinders, pistons and piston packings. ZENTRALINSTITUT FUR AUTOMATISIERUNG. July 24, 1962, No. 28345/62. Class 122 (1). In a fluid-operated actuator an elastic, e.g. rubber, sealing ring 10 interposed between the cylinder liner 7 and the piston skirt 6 is externally fluted in a manner forming a toothing around the periphery of its cross-section. The skirt 6 is mounted between plates 4, 5 secured on the piston-rod 8. The opposing surfaces of the skirt and of the liner are provided within parallel grooves having in cross-section the appearance of rack teeth which mesh with the teeth on the packing so that the latter rolls as the piston is actuated. The skirt and liner may be cylindrical or either or both of them may have the shape of a truncated cone so that the sealing ring is progressively compressed or decompressed in accordance with the operating fluid pressure as the piston moves axially. The hollow interior of the ring may contain a filler material and may be provided with a helicallywound reinforcing metal tape 11.
