Abstract

935,824. Air cushion vehicles. HOVERCRAFT DEVELOPMENT Ltd. Sept. 24, 1959 [Sept. 1, 1958], No. 27977/58. Divided out of 935,823. Class 4. An air-cushion vehicle in which the cushion is contained at least in part by a curtain of moving fluid issuing from a position in the lower part of the vehicle, recovery means spaced outboard of and a short distance from the means supplying a primary curtain, and means spaced outboard of the recovery means for forming a region of pressurised gas outboard of the recovery means so that the fluid forming the primary curtain flows first downward towards the supporting surface, being deflected round and outwards by the pressure of the cushion when formed and is further deflected round and upwards by the pressure in said region of pressurized gas outboard of the recovery means so as to be at least partly recovered into the recovery means. The vehicle may be formed with the arrangement of duets and ports shown in Fig. 2 so that two peripheral concentric curtains 2 and 3 are formed. Air from a supply duct 6 is discharged from a supply port 7 and is caused by the pressure of the supporting cushion to flow into an inlet transfer port 9, through transfer duct 8 and out of outlet transfer port 10. Additionally, air is discharged from port 11 to form a further curtain which results in the formation of a region 13 of pressurised gas which causes the inner curtain to flow up into transfer port 9. In Fig. 7 an ejector nozzle 29 generates a vortex flow out of port 25, through transfer port 27 and duct 28. A separate curtain issues from nozzle 31 to contain pressurized gas in region 32.
