Abstract

935,501. Change-speed control. VAUXHALL MOTORS Ltd. Sept. 15, 1961 [Sept. 16, 1960], No. 31937/60. Class 80 (2). Manual gear-shift mechanism comprises a selector shaft 2 actuated by the usual gear shift lever 6 and rotated to bring a recess 14 in a selector spade 13 into engagement with a lug 18 of a striker 15 or 16. The strikers 15, 16 are slidable on a common rail 17, the selector shaft 2 being slid axially to move the selected striker to establish the gear. Reverse is controlled by a third striker (not shown) mounted on a separate rail and engaged by the spade 13. The non-selected strikers are locked in their neutral positions by a circumferential groove 22 in a collar 20 which rotates with the shaft 2 but is fixed axially by a locating pin 19 engaging in a slot 30 in the collar 20. An axial slot 21 in the collar accommodates the spade 13. One angular position of the collar 20 and spade 13 for selecting one striker is determined by the side of the pin 19 engaging the base of the slot 30, another position is determined by the base of the slot abutting a spring-pressed stop-pin 24. Further rotation of the shaft 2 and collar 20 against the pressure of the pin 24 until the base of the slot engages the end of pin 19 selects the reverse striker. The axial positions of the selector shaft 2 are determined by a ball detent 11 engaging peripheral grooves 12 in the shaft.
