Abstract
Coating compositions which impart water-repellency to surfaces comprise solutions of hydrolysable fluorocarbon silanes of the formula <FORM:0935380/III/1> where Rf is a saturated radical containing 1 to 18 carbon atoms each of which forms part of a perfluoroalkyl or perfluorcyclohexyl group, R11 is a trivalent saturated hydrocarbon group of at least 3 carbon atoms, R is alkyl, alkoxy, phenyl, acyloxy, chloro or fluoro, at least one being chloro, fluoro, primary alkoxy or acetoxy, and X is Cl or Br. They may be dissolved in hydrocarbons or chlorofluorohydrocarbons and applied by wiping, dipping or spraying. For example, the compounds CF3(C6H9-Cl)SiCl3 and C4F9(C6H9-Cl)SiCl3 in an aerosol solvent are sprayed on to glass which is heated to 150 DEG C., or on to cold glass which is subsequently polished with a cloth moistened with isopropyl alcohol, and the glass is tested for water- and oil-repellency.ALSO:The invention comprises saturated fluorocarbon silanes of the formula <FORM:0935380/IV(a)/1> where Rf is a saturated radical containing 1 to 18 carbon atoms each of which forms part of a perfluoroalkyl or perfluorocyclohexyl group, R11 is a trivalent saturated hydrocarbon group having at least 3 carbon atoms, R is an alkyl or alkoxy group of up to 5 carbon atoms, or a phenyl, acyloxy, chloro or fluoro radical, at least one R being chloro, fluoro, primary alkoxy or acetoxy, and X is Cl or Br; and also comprises polysiloxanes obtained by their hydrolysis or other polymerization. The silanes are prepared by reacting a silane R1SiR3, where R1 is cyclohexenyl or terminally unsaturated alkenyl having at least 3 carbon atoms, with a fluorocarbon sulphonyl halide in the presence of a free radical generator, SO2 being liberated. The free radicals may be generated by heat, gamma rays, ultra-violet light, organic peroxides and azo compounds. Products containing silicon-bonded chlorine may be further reacted, e.g. with sodium acetate, to produce acetoxy silanes. In the examples: cyclohexenyl trichlorosilane is reacted (1) with perfluorooctyl sulphonyl chloride to give C8F17(C6H9-Cl)SiCl3, (2) with trifluoromethyl sulphonyl chloride to give CF3(C6H9-Cl)SiCl3, and (3) with perfluorobutyl sulphonyl chloride to give C4F9(C6H9-Cl)SiCl3; (4) CH2=CH(CH2)9SiCl3 is reacted with C8F17SO2Br to produce C8F17CH2CHBr(CH2)9SiCl3; (5) CH2=CH(CH2)9SiCl3 and C8F17SO2Cl produce C8F17CH2CHCl(CH2)9SiCl3; (6) CH2=CH(CH2)3Si(C6H5)(CH3)Cl and C4F9SO2Cl produce C4F9CH2CHCl(CH2)3Si(C6H5 (CH3)Cl. The compounds are soluble in volatile liquids, e.g. hydrocarbons and chlorofluorohydrocarbons. Polysiloxanes are obtained by hydrolysis, alone or with other chlorosilanes, or by polymerization, e.g. by reaction with a metal oxide such as ZnO. The polymers may be inert or heat-curable liquids, or solids. Uses: Coatings, lubricants, hydraulic fluids.
